Essential Oils for Pregnancy

Essential oils are gaining in popularity but they are very powerful and certain ones should be avoided during pregnancy. We discuss which ones to use safely while pregnant and how to use them.

Ginger Essential Oil
One of the best essential oils for nausea during pregnancy, ginger has been used since ancient times to help relieve an upset stomach. A study in 2012 discovered that a benefit of ginger is its ability to lessen the frequency and severity of nausea through inhalation of the oil.
Add 2-5 drops of ginger essential oil to a diffuser with water and let it circulate to help improve feelings of nausea. Ginger essential oil can also provide pain relief for sore knees or lower back pain.Mix 1 drop of ginger essential oil and orange essential oil with 2 Tbsp. of carrier oil and apply to sore muscles or achy joints.
Lavender Oil
There are many uses for lavender oil and pregnancy is a great time to start using this essential oil. Lavender essential oil is considered to be one of the safest essential oils today, and can be used for burns, headaches, muscle pain, skin healing, stress relief and promoting relaxation.
If you suffer from pregnancy headaches or migraines, you can use lavender essential oil to relieve tension and pain. To create your own compress, soak a washcloth in cold or hot water mixed with lavender essential oil and apply to the forehead or neck.
Alternatively, add 2 to 4 drops of lavender essential oil to a diffuser and let circulate.
Ylang ylang Oil
Ylang ylang is the ultimate nervous system oil for mild anxiety and depression. It’s a mood elevator and stress reliever with a sweet, fruity smell that most people like. Ylang ylang can be used to ease pregnancy stress, anxiety and insomnia when used in a diffuser or bath. It can also be used from time to time to combat pregnancy sadness and induce a more happy, joyful mood in times of stress.
Jasmine OilJasmine is an absolute (essence) that promotes self-confidence. It has a warm, exotic, floral fragrance that relaxes, soothes and uplifts. Jasmine is beneficial for the skin. It has been used throughout history for romance and attraction and for balancing the feminine energy of the body.
Peppermint Oil
During pregnancy, this essential oil is a reliable solution for morning sickness, along with lavender oil. Iranian researchers conducted a study participated in by 60 pregnant women who have morning sickness issues. A few drops of peppermint oil were placed near the beds of half of the participants while the other half were given a placebo.
There was a “decreasing trend in vomiting and nausea” among the peppermint group within seven days, particularly during the fourth night. Peppermint oil is also safe to use for other conditions commonly experienced by pregnant women. It reduces skin itchiness by reducing the temperature of the skin, reports a 2012 study.
Those who are suffering from heartburn can also find relief from this oil.
